Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

What is an Employee Assistance Program?

Relationship Matters promotes positive relationships within the workplace by delivering professional counselling services for Employee Assistance Programs on behalf of a number of Victorian organisations and employers.

An Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a confidential counselling service offered by employers to their employees to support their well-being in the workplace and in their personal lives. Depending on the employer’s arrangement, EAP may also extend to immediate family members.

Relationship Matters’ EAP service offers initial support and assistance to individuals and groups of employees who have personal and/or work related issues that may impact on their well-being, work performance, safety, individual and workplace morale and psychological health.

EAP counselling is aimed at assisting employees to:

  • understand and clarify issues that are directly concerning them, including any underlying issues.
  • identify and explore options to address those issues.
  • develop plans to approach the issues and find constructive solutions.

Events and issues which may give rise to requests for EAP services include (but are not limited to):

Work Issues:

  • Problems with performance.
  • Relationships between co-workers.
  • Bullying and harassment.
  • Managing conflict and anger management.
  • Adjusting to change in the workplace.
  • Career change.
  • Managing work related stress.

Personal Issues:

  • Anxiety or depression.
  • Stress management.
  • Grief and loss.
  • Midlife and life transition issues.
  • Emotional or physical abuse.
  • Low self-esteem.
  • Substance abuse.
  • Gambling problems.
  • Anger management.

Family Issues:

  • Work-life balance.
  • Concerns about children.
  • Relationship issues.
  • Parenting and step-parenting issues.
  • Separation and divorce.
  • Financial or legal problems.
  • Domestic violence.

Trauma Management Services

Relationship Matters can also provide a high level responsive critical incident service following workplace incidents, accidents, workplace deaths and associated trauma. Relationship Matters understands the need for a timely response when critical incidents arise and offers significant experience in working with trauma across a range of organisational settings.

This can include personal crisis intervention support, early intervention and assistance to individuals and groups of employees where long hours, workplace stressors and other factors can give rise to events which are life threatening or cause risk to personal, emotional or physical safety or wellbeing.

Manager Hotline Support and Advice

Relationship Matters’ services include hotline support to assist managers and leaders in managing more effectively in the workplace. Relationship Matters can assist with the varied issues that may arise for managers such as performance management of staff, having difficult conversations with employees, interpersonal and team conflict, leading change management, supporting teams through challenge and improving team functioning.

As part of the EAP, the employer will pay for an agreed number of confidential counselling sessions delivered by Relationship Matters. Depending on the particular arrangement with your employer, (please check with your manager, supervisor, or human resource officer) appointments may be made in either of two ways:

  • Supported Referral: A manager, supervisor or work colleague may recommend or encourage you to seek assistance for a particular issue you may be facing. Whether you accept this advice or not is your personal choice. If you wish to follow through you can contact Relationship Matters on (03) 8650 6262
  • Self Referral: Appointments can be made directly by simply telephoning (03) 8650 6262.

Please Note: The counselling sessions for employees are confidential. When matters arise that have serious implications for the workplace, or the safety or wellbeing of yourself or others, non-identifying feedback may be given to your employer.
