Counselling can mean different things to different people. At its core, it’s a chance to talk with an experienced counsellor who can help you understand what you’re going through and find ways to cope, build capacity and make positive changes.
At Relationship Matters, our individual counselling services in Melbourne and Victoria focus on helping you build capacity, build on your personal strengths, and find solutions that are meaningful to you. We provide a safe and inclusive space where you can feel seen, heard and supported without judgment.
Who is this for?
Everyone faces challenges in life at some point, and it’s okay to need extra support. Counselling offers a safe space for individuals to talk through what they’re facing and find new ways forward.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or just not quite yourself, you’re not alone and you don’t have to face it by yourself. Individual counselling can help you work through things like stress, relationship issues, grief, low mood, or times of change and uncertainty. Our experienced and qualified counsellors will listen and explore the issues that you are experiencing and help you identify strategies and ways to make positive changes.
Our individual counselling service in Melbourne is available to all adults, and you don’t need a referral.
What can I expect?
If you’ve never had counselling before, it’s completely normal to feel a bit nervous or unsure. Our job is to help you feel comfortable and supported throughout the entire process.
When you first get in touch, one of our friendly client services officers will explain our fees and help you book your session, whether you prefer to meet at one of our locations or online.
Before your first session, you’ll be asked to fill out a form with your personal details. This helps us understand your situation better and is required by our funding body. We’ll also ask you to sign a consent form, which explains the counselling process and your rights around privacy and confidentiality.
During your first session (which lasts about 50 minutes), your counsellor will:
- Discuss confidentiality and privacy with you.
- Begin building a trusting professional relationship.
- Ask questions to understand what’s been happening in your life.
- Explore any underlying triggers or factors that may be contributing to your situation.
- Most importantly, talk about what you hope to get out of counselling.
Together, you and your counsellor will make a plan for your next steps, whether that means weekly, fortnightly, or a different schedule that works for you. At the end of each session, our team will help you book your next appointment and arrange payment.
How can we help?
Our counsellors provide a warm and confidential space where you can talk openly and feel truly heard. Using evidence-based approaches, they can help you:
- Better understand yourself and your relationships
- Manage life’s transitions or times of change
- Reconnect with your values and what matters to you
- Identify the things that may be impacting your wellbeing
- Build confidence and resilience
Our Melbourne counselling services are available in person or online, designed to give you the support you need in a way that works best for you.
