Separation isn’t just a legal process, it’s also an emotional one. It can leave you feeling anxious, and uncertain, especially when children are involved. You might not know what your options are, what comes next or how to hold it all together.

Relationship Matters’ family law counselling services are here to support you. For those who are newly separated, in the middle of a complex co-parenting situation or adjusting to life after court. Our counsellors are here to provide support and guidance to navigate the changes in your and your children’s life.

Who is this for?

Family law counselling services are delivered in Melbourne and Victoria for individuals, co-parents and families navigating separation, family conflict or family transition and family law matters.

You might be:

  • Struggling with the emotional impact of a breakup
  • Trying to co-parent, but finding communication difficult
  • Preparing for mediation or attending family court
  • Worrying about how your children are coping
  • Feeling stuck in conflict and unsure how to move forward

You don’t have to go through this alone. We support families of all types facing separation difficulties and family law disputes.

What can I expect?

Our job is to help you feel comfortable and supported.

When you first get in touch, one of our friendly client services officers will explain our fees and help you book your session, whether you prefer to meet at one of our locations or online.

Before your first session you’ll be asked to fill out registration and consent for service forms. This helps us understand your situation better and explains the counselling process and your rights around privacy and confidentiality.

During your first session (which lasts about 50 minutes), your counsellor will:

  • Discuss confidentiality and privacy with you.
  • Ask questions to understand what’s been happening in your life.
  • Explore underlying factors that may be contributing to your situation.
  • Talk about what you hope to get out of counselling.

Together, you and your counsellor will make a plan for your next steps, whether that means weekly, fortnightly, or a different schedule that works for you. At the end of each session, our team will help you book your next appointment.

There’s no fixed number of sessions and you can attend for as long as it’s helpful.

How can we help?

Our counsellors provide a warm and confidential space where you can talk openly and feel truly heard. Using evidence-based approaches, they can help you:
